Pastors Ponderings

Galatians 5:1 says, “It was for freedom that Christ has set you free!”

Do you ever read the Bible and feel like saying ‘duh’? I mean, doesn’t this verse seem, well obvious really. I have been set free so of course it’s freedom I’m living in, what else could it be? Except, I’m wondering if it is that obvious?

Christ has set us free but you can say in simple words what Christ has set you free from? And you have to use simple words, with no Christian phrases like ‘sin’ because sometimes we don’t really know what we mean by our Christianese.

Think about it now, what does freedom in Christ mean to you? What pictures does it conjure in your mind? I realised, it is important to know what Christ has set us free from when I read Galatians 5:1 in a different translation. It said, “Christ has set you free. Make sure you that you stay free.” What does freedom in Christ look like? Picture it, then measure it against how you are living today. Do they match? Christ has set you free; maybe it’s time to work out whether you are staying in that freedom. Is it time for us as a church to reconsider and redefine what “freedom in Christ is”?
